What is Follicular Monitoring?
Follicular monitoring is the method of serial ultrasonic ovarian follicle analysis used to assess egg maturation status. It helps measure the follicle size that protects the growing egg and determines the uterine lining width.
What is the Purpose of follicular monitoring?
The purpose of follicle tracking is to provide statistics on the number of mature eggs that are going to ovulate and to ensure that this is achieved successfully.
When does follicle monitoring have to be done?
During a woman’s menstrual cycle, a follicle scan can be performed multiple times, usually between days 9-20. A follicle scan is a painless operation that helps the doctor to see the growth of the follicle inside the ovary. Sonographers can monitor the growth of the egg inside the follicle using small plastic probes implanted in the vagina.
Reasons for follicle monitoring
There are many explanations for the need for a scan, including:
1. Uncertain if ovulating
2. Not ovulating whatsoever
3. Miscarriage history
What Detects Follicle Monitoring?
Besides identifying when the follicle ruptures and releases the egg, several other items can also be observed, including:
1. Follicles that fail to develop
2. Follicles that break prematurely
3. Implantation of the egg onto the lining of the womb
Tracking these problems helps the patient and the doctors to treat them easily
